I still use 4.7.25 + patches myself. I don't know that we recommend any particular BDB version, we've only ever not recommended a specific version. ;)

We've run into some BDB lock leaks in early 4.8 that are fixed in 4.8.30. Haven't done any extensive testing of 5.0.
All tests pass for me on Debian x86-64.
