Not mandatory. Of course if you don't reload, then the setting won't have any effect on existing data. But if you modify an entry and relevant attribute after making the config change, then it will take effect for that entry.
I suppose a rule of thumb is to try to keep entries small enough to fit in a few pages. Larger than that and you're wasting a lot of I/O to update a single value in it.
