SSL, TLS and DNS SRV

I have slapd listening on port 636 only because I want to enforce use of SSL/TLS It all works successfully (I now have my UNIX users, mail, and about a dozen apps authenticating against it), however... I wanted fault tolerance, and I thought that the way to achieve this would be using DNS SRV and replication (which was also easy to get working) What I've observed: - if I create _ldaps._tcp.example.org SRV records, they are ignored - if I create _ldap._tcp.example.org SRV records, and I ldapsearch with a URI of the form "ldaps:///dc%3Dexample%2Cdc%3Dorg" it works So, it seems to be the combination of the ldaps URI prefix with the _ldap._tcp SRV record that is working, this doesn't seem right I've also found that other LDAP apps have slightly different expectations too: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=661955 I went searching for a definite answer: +site:ietf.org ldaps srv http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2782 refers to the name of the service from `Assigned Numbers', http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1700 which omits ldaps, but it is defined elsewhere as a distinct service name: http://www.ietf.org/assignments/service-names-port-numbers/service-names-po… Therefore, my feeling is that - if an ldaps: URI is used, the SRV query should be seeking _ldaps._tcp, and -if an ldap: URI is used (and StartTLS may or may not be requested by the user), the SRV query should be looking for _ldap._tcp Also, can anyone comment on why the URI needs to be escaped manually when using DNS SRV?

memberOf and glued databases

Hi, short question first: Is overlay memberOf supposed to work with glued databases in any direction? I tried with 2.4.28 and get the following results: slapd.conf with two databases 1. step ------- This is simple. delta-syncrepl and mirrormode problem (2.4.29)

Hi, I want to use delta-syncrepl replication with 2 masters. But each slapd-process permanently needs about 25 % CPU usage without any traffic on it. Controlled LDAP Proxy/Relay

Hello, I'v implemented a OpenLDAP Metadirectory that proxying 2 Microsft AD targets. One target is customers AD, the second our AD for management purposes. Problem: slapd-meta tries to authenticate the user first by one target and if this user there not exist will be the second target connected. Means: in both directories Intrusion Detection register a lot of unsuccessfully authentication. Is it possible to implement the controlled proxy with OpenLDAP ? E.g., like Radiusproxy based on realm: when username is xxx(a)domain01.com<mailto:xxx@domain01.com> go to the target1, and when username is xxx(a)domain99.net<mailto:xxx@domain99.net> go to the target2. ssl negotiation and openldap

Hello, I've recently had issues with a 3rd party java client using jdk 1.4.x, trying to connect with ldaps:// to openldap 2.4.26, compiled with OpenSSL 1.0.0d It would appear that the client's jdk 1.4.x has a few harsh restrictions with regard to modulus size in certiicates, even with all unrestricted "export" policies installed. So i was wondering a few things : 1. does openldap do anything with the CA certs, other than verify local or remote certiticates, such as sending them over the ssl connection ? 2. it's my understanding that in SSL negotiation, only server or client certiticates are exchanged, and ca certs's are not sent over the wire (as IMHO it would literally bet a "trust" issue to do otherwise :). 3. other than providing certificates / keys to the openssl API, is there anything special that happens other than hand off to stock openssl negotiation ? Trying to work out what is being sent to the client to trigger a "modulus size" error on the client, other than clients inherent badness which i cannot control :) If 3. is no, then i'm open to any suggestions with regard to interesting or useful SSL negotiation documents out there, that might shed some light. Hello, Sorry, I tried posting this yesterday but it didn't seem to make it on the list - trying again. I currently have OpenLDAP (2.4.28) running on a Linux box with a local database and a meta backend which represents the local database along with a remote Active Directory server (2008 R2). Logs on AD indicate that a user sync preformed a search. As I understand, id-assertion is working?? Now if I change the remote entry to the following (enable ssl): ##Remote Active Directory uri ldaps://ad.example.com/cn=Users,dc=example,dc=com idassert-bind bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=sync,cn=users,dc=example,dc=com" credentials=secret tls_cacert=/etc/openldap/cacerts/ad-ca.cer tls_cert=/etc/openldap/local.pem tls_key=/etc/openldap/local.key The same command (ldapsearch -x -D "cn=root, dc=example,dc=com" -w secret -b " dc=example,dc=com " -H ldap://localhost) binds locally successfully but does not list any remote attributes from AD. Verbose logging enabled on Active Directory indicates an anonymous bind and subsequent failure. This is what I'm trying to understand. However, if I search using an account that resides on the AD server (-D " cn=sync,cn=users,dc=example,dc=com" -w secret) it works and the traffic is encrypted. The root account "seems" to be ignored when it comes to the assertion butonly when ssl is enabled. Now, if I use TLS instead, ##Remote Active Directory uri ldap://ad.example.com/cn=Users,dc=example,dc=com tls start idassert-bind bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=sync,cn=users,dc=example,dc=com" credentials=secret tls_cacert=/etc/openldap/cacerts/ad-ca.cer tls_cert=/etc/openldap/local.pem tls_key=/etc/openldap/local.key Everything works, and I see the remote entries in AD using the meta root credentials. I've verified the network traffic to ensure it was indeed encrypted. I've also verified that using ldapsearch directly (ex: -H ldaps://ad.exmaple.com) to AD and it also functions as intended. I did play around with slapd-ldap and it seemed behave the same as meta regarding ldaps. In my eyes, something in my configuration makes the proxy seemingly ignore ldaps entries. Hopefully I didn't miss anything painfully obvious in the docs :) Thanks,
