OpenLDAP had been running fine our AIX box then all of a sudden we are starting to get core_dumps in the errpt and we have to restart openldap. We turned on the logging for ldap and the errors we are getting are: ch_malloc of 8388608 bytes failed Assertion failed: __EX, file ch_malloc.c, line 57
ch_malloc means that you ran out of memory, in most cases. Re-tune your server appropriately. I also advise upgrading, since 2.3.27 is particularly old, and IIRC some memory-leak fixes were put into place since then.
