So far I don't see OpenLDAP specific issues here (assuming python-ldap is linked to OpenLDAP's client library).

Another user of the Debian package of python-ldap reported such a behaviour on the python-ldap-dev mailing list. The problem was solved by re-compiling OpenLDAP libs and python-ldap and link against OpenSSL instead of GnuTLS. (Sigh!)
