To build with debugging symbols, you need to use a CFLAGS value of -g, like:
CFLAGS="-g" ./configure <whatever options you use> make depend make
make install DESTDIR=/my/path/to/install STRIP=""
The STRIP="" ensures none of the debugging symbols inserted by gcc get stripped out.
