But we need to store some Chinese information in it. We store Chinese information by modifying the nis.schema from attributetype ( 1.3.6.1.1.1.1.2 NAME 'gecos' DESC 'The GECOS field; the common name' EQUALITY caseIgnoreIA5Match SUBSTR caseIgnoreIA5SubstringsMatch SYNTAX 1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.26 SINGLE-VALUE ) to attributetype ( 1.3.6.1.1.1.1.2 NAME 'gecos' DESC 'The GECOS field; the common name' EQUALITY caseExactMatch SUBSTR caseExactSubstringsMatch SYNTAX 1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.15 SINGLE-VALUE ) . When we upgrade the openldap server, the modifed "nis.schema" would be replaced with a unmodified "nis.schema". Our servers will be down, because there are some strings in database which conflicts to "nis.schema". May you change the default schema of the "gecos" field and make it to be able to carry dual-byte string? RFC 2251 required this, but RFC 4511 changed it to the opposite: The RDN attrs need not be present in AddRequest.attributes. slapd and slapadd should generate them if they are missing. I don't know if the change belongs in RE23.

Another question: How should backends handle the return value from, and rs->sr_err to/from, send_search_entry() and send_search_reference()? The back-ldif handling differs from back-bdb/search.c. At one point ldapsearch got insufficientAccessRights when an entry _below_ baseDN in the search scope was ACL-protected. But I can't reproduce it, and don't know if the error was mine or back-ldif's. Other details: ldif_back_search() modified op->ors_scope. That looked improper, I removed it. The ENOENT special case for rename() in spew_entry() made little sense, since it was just moving the file it just created, and to the same directory. I deleted it, but I wonder why it was there.
