How about saying what problems you encountered? LDIF is supposed to be a portable attribute, although if Fedora DS is anything like SunOne, then it will add plenty of internal bits to the data around server config pieces. However, the general non-server specific data should import into OpenLDAP just fine as long as you load the corresponding schemas. This really goes for any LDAP directory->directory migration.

Has anyone managed to connect dovecot to an ldap server? if so what are the steps needed? I have followed a guide online but it doesnt appear to work.

i can highly recommend workaround.org as an online guide, my dovecot (with ldap) configuration is at http://static.kiberpipa.org/~redduck666/dovecot/ (using dovecot from backports).
