confusing manpage for slapcat for backup

I have some questions: When I look at manpage for slapcat from openldap-servers-2.3.27-5 in Centos5.0, it says: LIMITATIONS In general, your slapd(8) should not be running (at least, not in read- write mode) when you do this to ensure consistency of the database. But when I look at its manpage from openldap-servers-2.3.43-3.el5 in Centos5.4, it says: LIMITATIONS For some backend types, your slapd(8) should not be running (at least, not in read-write mode) when you do this to ensure consistency of the database. It is always safe to run slapcat with the slapd-bdb(5), slapd-hdb(5), and slapd-null(5) backends. Question 1: Is it always safe to run slapcat with slapd running even for openldap-servers-2.3.27-5 in Centos5? The administration guide for OpenLDAP 2.4 at http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/maintenance.html explains more on this, I quote: "2. Periodically run slapcat and back up the LDIF file: Slapcat can be run while slapd is active. However, one runs the risk of an inconsistent database- not from the point of slapd, but from the point of the applications using LDAP. For example, if a provisioning application performed tasks that consisted of several LDAP operations, and the slapcat took place concurrently with those operations, then there might be inconsistencies in the LDAP database from the point of view of that provisioning application and applications that depended on it. One must, therefore, be convinced something like that won't happen. One way to do that would be to put the database in read-only mode while performing the slapcat. The other disadvantage of this approach is that the generated LDIF files can be rather large and the accumulation of the day's backups could add up to a substantial amount of space. You can use *slapcat*(8) to generate an LDIF file for each of your *slapd*(8) back-bdb or back-hdb databases. slapcat -f slapd.conf -b "dc=example,dc=com" For back-bdb and back-hdb, this command may be ran while slapd(8) is running." Using "overlay dynlist" with Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 LDAP server using slapd.d (not slapd.conf) ?

Hi The desired implementation is to control user logins on different lab machines based on the project groups. Scenario: Bob is part of project group 'mars' & John is part of 'venus' then I have added lab machines x1-x3 to group 'mars' & y1-y3 to group venus. Now I want John to only access machines allocated for project 'mars' i.e x1 to x3 & John to access machines allocated for 'venus' i.e y1 to y3 I went through this link<http://www.hurricanelabs.com/september2009_login_security_using_openldap_an…>learned that it can be achieved using "overlay dynlist". Please correct me if I've got it wrong. However my lab server is Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic koala) and it is using slapd.d (not slapd.conf) So now if I want to attempt to use "overlay dynlist" how should I go about it? Has anyone done this before? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Shamika

Hello list We use our Openldap with a lot of applications like apache, squid, samba ... What for us whould be very usefull is to define in ldap groups with users and other groups therin. Is this possible in Ldap or maybe with the nss-module ? I cant find any documentation. Thank you luis

Hi, I am running OpenLDAP 2.4 on Ubuntu 9.10. I am trying to get user passwords to be stored {SHA}. I understand the way to do this is by adding password-hash {SHA} line to the slapd.conf file. However, on Ubuntu 9.10 the /etc/slapd.conf is a directory not a file. What am I missing here?

openldap bug: libldap mutex hang on ldap_int_sasl_mutex

After digging into this more, this definitely looks like a bug in openldap. I modified openldap to make all mutex's recursive. Then my GSSAPI rebind proc worked properly, and the search searched all referrals and found the result (two referrals later). Partial replication

Is it possible to replicate, on a slave, two branches of the DIT (only)? I have several instances of LDAP running on servers throughout the world. Connection to some of these from our support location is not dependable. I want to do something similar to this: Main LDAP (here, master): dc=example,dc=com | +--o=support | +--o=location_A | +--o=location_B | +--o=location_C In Location A (remote slave): dc=example,dc=com | +--o=support | +--o=location_A In Location B (remote slave): dc=example,dc=com | +--o=support | +--o=location_B Location A & B are two different customers, therefore it would not be prudent to replicate Location B's users in Locations A. But I need the Support group to exist in all locations. Can this be done using syncrepl? Another thought is to have LDAP Masters existing in each location, and somehow replicate the Support branch to each (mirrormode?). Should this be the approach? The e-mail thread seems to have wandered a bit, hoping I am replying to the correct one. I've tested both methods, ACL vs 'syncrepl search filter', both seem to work well for me. I agree with Andrew's point that controlling this via the ACLs on the provider is more secure (in my case). Thanks for all the help and insight. Hi all, Am trying to get the memberOf overlay attribute working with openLDAP. I need to authenticate to a Cisco ASA 5510 and set up group mapping policy. I've been round the houses quite a few times and got pretty close but no Marlboro Light (let alone a cigar). I've set up attribute mapping on the Cisco which allows me to convert the memberOf attribute into something readable by the Cisco but it's not getting that far. forgotten rootdn psw

ok...So i'm an ID10T!! LOL. But seriously, I setup an OpenLdap server and migrated /etc/passwd to it, and all is well: however, I did that months ago, and you guessed it, somehow I'm having a "senior" moment, and can't remember the psw for the rootdn, so that I can add another user to the Ldap server. I'm sure there is probably a way to decode the "hashed/encrypted" password. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to have to delete everything and start again, but if that's what I must do, then so be it.
