Hi
Really for me the best option was this list and documentation inside openldap.org. In this cases the idea to buy a book not's a good option, all books are general about active directories but I don't know any specific of openldap. Well O'really can like you :-)

Best Regards

Mastering OpenLDAP. Really good.

Agreed. It's a little out of date though, a revised edition that covers more recent features would be useful.
Good question by the way. I think that if your installing on Linux I would look at the distros documention. For example Red Hat & CentOS have step by step setup guides.

For RHEL6 and derivatives I would recommend this on serverfault (http://serverfault.com/questions/323497/how-do-i-configure-ldap-on-centos-6-...)
Gives a good idea about initial setup. Because it only uses cn=config.
This combined with Mastering LDAP, OpenLDAP guide and some slides from LDAPCon

i recently enjoyed reading 'mastering OpenLDAP' by Matt Butcher,it's a really proper introduction. what's unfortunate though, is that i couldn't find a book that uses the dynamic configuration in it's examples, so that might be a bit confusing (at least it was for me).
