Searching through the archives, helpful information, but I wasn't able to find anything that quite matched my issue. Some background, I am running CentOS 7 with OpenLDAP version 2.4.40 and I have been following along a tutorial I found here:
OpenLDAP 2.4.40 contained a number of serious bugs. I strongly advise against using it, particularly with MMR.
As for your ldapadd, did you hit control-D when done, so it would exit? Otherwise, it's waiting on continued input from you.

I will look at upgrading it then, this is the default package that is available in CentOS Yum repository. Actually I got it working, by taking it down to trying it with only 2 servers and making sure that each one referenced the other with respect to producer. Then added the other two once I was convinced it was working by using the same logic but thinking in a matrix (i.e. ldap1 needed to reference ldap2, ldap3, ldap4 as producers - ldap3 needed to reference ldap1, ldap2, ldap4 as producers - etc)
Thanks again for the suggestion, I will look for an update or build one myself --
