I have just started to dig into openLDAP and I am against a roadblock right now...I am sure the issue i am having is straightforward for those LDAP experts out there, so bear with my ignorance. My slapd.conf file is listed below # # See slapd.conf(5) for details on configuration options. # This file should NOT be world readable. # ucdata-path ./ucdata include ./schema/core.schema # Define global ACLs to disable default read access. # Do not enable referrals until AFTER you have a working directory # service AND an understanding of referrals. #referral ldap:/root.openldap.org pidfile ./run/slapd.pid argsfile ./run/slapd.args # Load dynamic backend modules: # modulepath ./libexec/openldap # moduleload back_bdb.la # moduleload back_ldap.la # moduleload back_ldbm.la # moduleload back_passwd.la # moduleload back_shell.la # Sample security restrictions # Require integrity protection (prevent hijacking) # Require 112-bit (3DES or better) encryption for updates # Require 63-bit encryption for simple bind # security ssf=1 update_ssf=112 simple_bind=64 # Sample access control policy: # Root DSE: allow anyone to read it # Subschema (sub)entry DSE: allow anyone to read it # Other DSEs: # Allow self write access # Allow authenticated users read access # Allow anonymous users to authenticate # Directives needed to implement policy: # access to dn.base="" by * read # access to dn.base="cn=Subschema" by * read # access to * # by self write # by users read # by anonymous auth # # if no access controls are present, the default policy # allows anyone and everyone to read anything but restricts # updates to rootdn. See slappasswd(8) and slapd.conf(5) for details. # Use of strong authentication encouraged. rootpw secret # The database directory MUST exist prior to running slapd AND # should only be accessible by the slapd and slap tools. # Mode 700 recommended. directory ./data # Indices to maintain index objectClass eq
I am connecting to the server just fine, and I am looking at the database through eclipse apache DS studio plugin. Notice how I have the rootDN set to "cn=Manager,dc=my-domain,dc=com" and the suffix set to "dc=my-domain,dc=com", but I dont see this root entry in my editor. all I see is Root DSE(1). I expand that tree and there is nothing underneath it. I assume that by starting the server with the above slapd.conf, I should be able to create the rootDN, if not how does one go about creating a rootDN ? Thanks Narsi

Hi,
Installing openldap I made the mistake to follow an old HOWTO and put the root passwort in slapd.conf encrypted as recommend in that HOWTO. So far so good. According to murphyś law I didn`t note the plain password so that I know have to reset it. As I couldn`t find a usefull description to do that yet, I would like to ask you for help.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards,
Uli

If you're not using back-config (i.e. no -F at startup), simply replace in slapd.conf the hashed value of rootpw with a new value (either hashed or not).

Ciao Pierangelo,
Manz thanks for your request. I have already tried this unfortunately without success.
Kind regards,
