On Ubuntu you would leave slapd running and just do this (as root):
However, he is on Fedora, not Ubuntu, and hopefully they don't have the obnoxious ldapi:/// as root requirement.
This is definitely not obnoxious. This is in fact pretty useful! And I already have it on my TODO list for Fedora. It will be added soon.
