Yes, but I usually use -e relax.

$ ldapmodify -h [..] -e [!]<ext>[=<extparam>] general extensions (! indicates criticality) [..] [!]relax

My servers do not advertise this control, do they?

Mine lists it in rootDSE but it's built with -DSLAP_SCHEMA_EXPOSE. Not sure whether this flag applies here though.
