Actually we are getting "can't contact ldap server" error while using ldapsearch command itself!!
Gone through the openldap docs in http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/appendix-common-errors.html#ldap_*:%20Ca... telnet localhost 389 and got the out put as "Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused" and we used the command netstat -an|grep 389 and didn get a output.. how to enable the port no 389? we tried to open port through iptables..but not able to do that too..we are doing this in debian etch

I was following the documentation to setup openLDAP stuff - http://www.jukie.net/~bart/ldap/ldap-authentication-on-debian/http://www.jukie.net/%7Ebart/ldap/ldap-authentication-on-debian/
You should read the OpenLDAP Admin Guide to get the basic concepts not 3rd-party docs which might be distribution-specific and/or wrong/outdated.
http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/
Or for 2.3.x:
http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin23/
I got the following message: Can't contact LDAP Server
This means the LDAP server was unreachable.
How to overcome this problem??
Hard to say without knowing anything about your setup at all...
Ciao, Michael.
