In 2.4.38 the comment is: (...) * under (page size / #MDB_MINKEYS / 3).

That was a doc fix to reflect some rare cases needing stricter limits.

Get 2.4.39, it has a higher safe max and you can just define MDB_MAXKEYSIZE=0 to get it.
