The BDB version is:

It looks like checkpointing was the issue. Having run 'slapd_db_checkpoint -1' and 'slapd_db_archive -d' almost all the log files were removed. I've setup a cron job to checkpoint and clean-out hourly.
Thanks for the tip about the RPMs, I'll look into doing a dedicated build.

Well, you don't say what version of BDB, or what patches it may or may not have, which is *extremely* important. And 2.3.27 may well be an affected OpenLDAP release. There are many reasons not to use the RHEL builds of OpenLDAP for servers, that have been hashed over this list many times. I advise reading:
