So, if we are currently running 4.2 (FreeBSD systems) with 2.3, you'd advise on dumping data via slapcat and just wipe out db4.2 and replace with 4.4?

Personally I'd go with 4.6 with 2.3, and 4.7 with 2.4. ;) But going from 2.3 to 2.4 you pretty much want to do a slapcat/slapadd anyway.
