i am setting my ldap configuration. I read that includes are deprecated. What is it supposed to be the replacement?

If you're importing an existing slapd.conf to back-config the include statements were added for informational purpose. Nothing else. They don't have any effect.

The concept of an include doesn't fit well with the concept of back-config's dynamic configuration. Therefore, there is no direct replacement. See http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-software/200701/msg00280.html.
