Am currently running openldap-2.3.35 against BerkeleyDB version 4.5.20. Saw that there are now the stable openLDAP version 2.3.39 and also the Berkeley DB version 4.6.21.
I used openLDAP to power my qmail-ldap and wonder if I really need to upgrade at all. If the answer is yes, then with openLDAP version 2.3.39, would it be recommended to go for the latest Berkeley DB's version of should I stay with my current 4.5.20 ? I have read (was it this list?) somewhere that there were some incompatibilities issues between some version of openLDAP and Berkeley DB.
Please advise and thank you in advance.

OpenLDAP 2.3 does not support BDB 4.6. If you want to use BDB 4.6, you must use the OpenLDAP 2.4 branch.

If I stay with 2.3 (for the moment), how easy would it be to upgrade to 2.4 along with Berkeley DB 4.6 ? I am no sysadmin, so an easy upgrade for you guys could be a PITA to me.

Should I stay awhile with 2.3, would it be a PITA to upgrade to 2.4 branch and BDB 4.6 ? I am no sysadmin. Appreciate your advise on this. TIA.

That depends on your OS and distribution. Red Hat derivatives can use Buchan Milne's rpms/srpm which make substituting 2.4 w/ bdb-4.6 for 2.3 as easy as falling off a log; others who can't/won't use these rpms have found configuring 2.4 w/ bdb-4.6 without being a dyed-in-the-wool sysadmin a PITA.
I guess if you're using qmail you won't be using Red Hat or derivatives. My own choice is, that as a Red Hat sysadmin I've installed Buchan's 2.4.7 (srpm -> rpms) on my FC test machine. After a few months' experience of 2.4 I'd say that there's no way I'll ever again install (even Buchan's) 2.3 on new sites, and there are a couple coming along.
