According to recent commits and posts by Howard, mirror mode seems to allow writes to all masters under the assumption they have tightly sync'ed clocks (namely, under ntp with very low latency). See http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-devel/200702/msg00019.html and test050 in HEAD code.
