Red Hat/FC/CentOS people should *never* build from a virgin tarball unless it's absolutely necessary, this statement after many years' experience with both methods. In 99% of all cases, rpms or srpms are available for all the above platforms.
Well, unless they know what they are doing ;-)
One could argue that, if they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't ...
The point about rpms is, that they are part of a package system, in which the idea is to avoid dependency problems and stick to the LFH file system hierarchy.
I run multiple OL servers, masters and slaves, and installing from a virgin tarball on these would be (was, in the past) a real PITA. Furthermore, if I get a problem with a new software release, it's a few seconds work to revert to one which worked, and remove *everything* offending in doing so.
If one wants to compile, one can do so to one's heart's content with srpms, and tweak as much as wanted. But then in the knowledge that some one who knows what he's doing (well, mostly) has done most of the dirty work before. I spent years of Red Hat months fighting rpms, now I insist on them.
