OK, I got past this problem by simply configuring all overlays (required installing application that provided sql.h library):
./configure --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-backends --enable-overlays
Started slapd with these warnings:

Yes, warnings. You can add a DB_CONFIG file later. There's a sample one provided in /etc/openldap (since you prefixed --sysconfdir=/etc)
[root@db workarea]# ldapadd -x -D "cn=Manager,dc=example,dc=com" -W
-f example.ldif Enter LDAP Password:
