Are you running slapd as a user, or as root? A user often has a much more restrictive policy on available file descriptors than root processes do by default.

I am running slapd as a user on the provider and consumers. Usually the fd # doesn't exceed 100 on the provider while it can go above 600 on each consumer that is used only for lookups. Nonetheless that problem has never occurred on any of the consumers.
