Yes, indeed the way was to use a simple bind of an email user with admin permissions in Google, and with that, I was able to do the bind. Thank you!

I've no idea if Google's LDAP supports SASL/EXTERNAL.  You'd have to ask
Google.  We used simple binds to Google w/o issue at a prior job I worked
at to sync data from OpenLDAP to it.
